Celebrating 40 years of accounting in Fort Macleod

Our journey began when Young Parkyn McNab & Co. opened a full-time office in Fort Macleod, with Jim Monteith as Partner and Helma Hart as Receptionist. Soon after, Erna Thyssen joined the team, followed by Mary Halbert in 1986 and Cassandra VanEe in 1987.

In those early days, technology looked a little different—the office had one computer (rarely used), a typewriter, and even a Dictaphone. Jim Monteith made full use of the Dictaphone, dictating letters that were typed up each morning—carbon copies and all. Making a typo meant starting over or breaking out the liquid white-out on every single copy. Tax returns were completed entirely by hand and typed out manually.

The team expanded significantly in 1991 with the introduction of the GST. Many clients felt unequipped to navigate the new requirements for accounting and GST returns, and our office was there to help guide them through the changes. This marked a turning point, ushering in a period of steady growth both in staff and in services offered.

Over the past four decades, the Fort Macleod regional office has proudly served clients from numerous communities across Southern Alberta. We’ve supported individuals and businesses with accounting services, GST filings, personal and corporate tax returns, and corporate year ends. As our client base grew, so too did the office—undergoing several renovations to better serve our community and support our expanding team.

As we celebrate this 40-year anniversary, we reflect with gratitude on the trust our clients have placed in us and the dedication of every team member who helped build this legacy. Here's to the past, present, and future of serving our community with professionalism, integrity, and care.
