Changes to Alberta's Employment Standards Code
The last time the Alberta Employment Standards Code was updated was 1988. Can you just hear the Calgary Olympics theme song playing? Don Getty was premier and a litre of gas cost 41¢. Times certainly have changed and so are our employment standards.
As part of Bill 17: The Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act, many changes that are designed to protect the rights of hardworking Albertans, support their families and help businesses stay competitive will come into effect on January 1, 2018.
Employers and employees should make themselves aware of the changes. If you are involved in payroll preparation, we highly recommend you visit the Employment Standards Code website to be prepared.
Changes will affect:
- General holiday and general holiday pay
- Leave eligibility
- Compassionate care leave
- Maternity/parental leave
- Rest periods
- Compressed work weeks
- Minimum wage
- Vacations and vacation pay
- Termination and temporary layoffs
- Youth employment
- New unpaid employee leaves
- Enforcement and administration
- Farms and ranches for waged, non-family employees
